A photobomb can turn an ordinary picture into the one you keep

You line up the picture, everyone smiles and the background suddenly decides it wants a part in the story. That is the beauty of a photobomb. The photo you planned is rarely the photo you remember.

Sometimes it is a famous face. Sometimes it is somebody walking past. And sometimes the most determined performer has whiskers.

The background steals the picture

Original fictional illustration of a curious cat interrupting a holiday selfie

In our imagined version, two friends have everything ready for a nice holiday selfie. The light is lovely, the waterfront looks great and the cat has other plans. You can barely look at anything else.

This scene is fictional. It is simply a playful example of how the smallest interruption can become the whole point of a photograph.

You notice it in two stages

First comes the picture you expected. Then comes the detail you missed. That little delay is what makes a good photobomb so funny.

The interruption can be obvious, like our very enthusiastic cat, or almost hidden in the corner. Either way, the viewer gets to discover the joke.

The imperfect one might be better

A perfectly posed photo can be nice. An unexpected expression or a curious animal can give it a story. It is often the picture people bring up years later.

Of course, keep it friendly. A funny moment works best when the people in the picture can enjoy it too.

Have you ever found something in the background after taking a photo? We suspect the cat would say this picture turned out exactly as planned.
