  • Toddler Shreds More Than $1,000 Of His Parents Savings

Imagine your horror if you found money in the shredder. Loads of it.

This little toddler in Utah shred more than $1,000 that his parents were saving up.

Ben and Jackee Belnap were saving the cash to reimburse Ben’s parents for University of Utah season football tickets. They had $1,060 in an envelope, which disappeared just like that.

Ben told KSL-TV the couple started searching the house when Jackee shouted out, “I found it.” She was holding the shredder.

Their 2-year-old son, Leo, helps his mom shred junk mail or important documents that they want to get rid of. Apparently, he got his hands on the envelope, and now, thanks to Leo and the shredder, all the hard-earned savings are in thousands of pieces.

The money was locked in a cabinet until it was time to pay Ben’s parents for the tickets. But as soon as they placed the envelope full of cash on the counter to deliver it, it disappeared.

“So me and my wife had been saving up to pay for our @Utah_Football tickets in cash,” Belnap wrote on Twitter. “We pulled our money out yesterday to pay my mom for the season… Well we couldn’t find the envelope until my wife checked the shredder. Yup. 2 year old shredded $1,060.”

Good news for the Belnaps is that the US Treasury has a team of experts that piece destroyed cash together again repay the amount in full. Ben contacted the Treasury Department and he said he was told to ship the shredded cash for possible replacement.

“I called the guy the next morning and he said, ‘Oh, we might be able to help you here,’ and I was shocked,” Ben said. “He said, ‘Bag it up in little Ziploc bags, mail it to D.C., and in one to two years, you’ll get your money back’.”

Jackee says the couple has learned their lesson and won’t be leaving valuable envelopes, or anything that could end up in the shredder, out again.

Speaking to News4Utah, Jackee said at first she cried, but only for a minute. They couldn’t help it, they both laughed. She said as sick and devastated as they were for losing the money, it was just one of those moments when you have to laugh.

Jackee said that obviously Leo will not get near the shredder again, but she did add that it will make “a great wedding story one day”. There is no way Leo is getting out of this one!

Well, as they say, its all about the sugar! Regular soda cans use corn syrup for sweetness, which has higher density than artificial sweeteners that are used in diet sodas. There’s the science. Now go try it!

    # 3: A bag of chips will puff up at high altitude places

8 Weirdly Fun Facts You Have To Know Right Away! 2

Bear with me, some science again (interesting though). It’s about the air pressure. The air inside the bag of chips matches the pressure of the altitude it was sealed. When you go higher and the pressure gets lower, the pressure inside the bag of chips becomes higher than what it is outside, causing it to push against the bad and hence puff up.

    # 4: The word “snack” originates from dogs stealing food through history

  • This device can help people in dry areas to pull water out of thin air

In what could be a massive development and break through, American scientists have recently declared that people living in dry, drought-ridden areas may soon be able to get water straight from a source which is present everywhere the air.

According to the scientists, they have developed a box which will convert low humidity air into water, which will produce several litres of water every 12 hours.

Evelyn Wang, a mechanical engineer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and co-author of the paper says that that box takes the water from the air and captures it. According to her, the technology could be “really great of remote areas where there’s really limited infrastructure.”

The system which is currently in the model phase, uses a material which looks like sand in powder form to trap air in its tiny pores. When heated by the sun or any other heat source, water molecules in the trapped air are released and condensed-thus pulling water out of thin air, said the scientists.

A recent test conducted at the roof of MIT has concluded that that the system can produce about a glass of water every hour in 20-30% humidity.

While there are companies like Water-Gen and EcoloBlue who produce atmospheric water-generation units that create water from air, this prototype is more special. Its specialty is that it can cultivate water in low humidity environments using no energy, according to Wang.

She further stated in an interview with the Thomson Reuters Foundation, “it doesn’t have to be this complicated system that requires some kind refrigeration cycle.”

An estimated one third of the world’s population lives in areas with low relative humidity and even though areas going through droughts often experience dry air, but Wang said the new product could help them still get access to water

“Now we can get to regions that really are pretty dry, arid regions,” she said. “We can provide them with a device and they can use it pretty simply.”

Her co-author Omar Yaghi further adds that the technology opens the door for what he calls “personalised water”.

Yaghi is a chemistry professor at University of California, Berkeley who envisions a future where the water is produced off-grid for individual homes and possibly farms using the device.

In the next few years, Wang said, the developers are hoping to find a way to reproduce the devices on a large scale and eventually create a formal product. The resulting device, she believes, will be relatively affordable and accessible.
