Most of us open a delivery box, take out what we ordered and forget about the cardboard. But look at those layers and folds for a moment. There is quite a lot hiding in something we normally put straight aside.
These original craft concepts imagine three different things a plain box could become. They are design ideas to look at and enjoy, rather than photographs of a particular artist’s finished work.
A dinosaur with a very different kind of armour
First comes this little triceratops. The layered edges do most of the work here. What normally looks like the rough side of a cardboard box becomes part of the texture of the body.
The horns and the wide frill make it easy to recognise. And somehow it looks quite friendly. Probably because the only thing it could seriously damage is your spare box collection.
A camera that does not need a battery
Now look at the little circular pieces around the lens. A few repeated shapes can make a simple object look much more detailed than you expect. The buttons and strap give this camera concept its character.
It will not take your holiday photos, of course. But as something to look at on a shelf, it has already done quite a good job. No charger required either.
And a train made from the same humble material
The train is where all those little parts start to add up. Wheels, windows, a chimney and a carriage. Each piece is fairly simple on its own, but together they turn into something you recognise immediately.
Look closely at the ridged surfaces. Instead of trying to hide the cardboard, the design lets it show. That is part of the appeal. You can see the ordinary material and still enjoy what it has become.
Which one caught your eye first? The camera would be my choice. Though it might be a little awkward explaining why there are now boxes on the shelf instead of in the recycling.
