Believe it or not, Apophis once had astronomers looking at a possible collision with Earth in 2036. An asteroid hitting our planet sounds like every human being’s worst nightmare. But that warning has since been ruled out.
NASA’s radar observations in March 2021 ruled out an Earth impact for at least 100 years. The asteroid was removed from NASA’s Sentry Impact Risk Table, which tracks possible future collisions.
Apophis will still make a close pass on 13 April 2029. It is something scientists want to study, rather than a reason to panic.
The video below accompanied the original 2016 post and reflects the reports discussed at that time.
