Feeling alone, not having friends, not being able to mingle in social settings can make a person feel isolated to the extent of cultivating bad habits like smoking, alcoholism, obesity and even contemplating suicide!

It starts small and develops into a huge giant in no time. If we are able to recognize early that we are lonely and need to do something about it, we can save ourselves from the madness that we invite into our lives.

Here are some ways to face the issues we are afraid to confront and help ourselves isolate the loneliness we’re feeling.

  1. Reach out to someone

This is the best thing to do when you’re feeling lonely. Just reach out to someone you can trust and tell them how you feel. Blot out loneliness by making it feel lonely. It could be a family member, a friend, colleague, classmate, etc. Let them know that you need them to be there for you and share your heart with them. Spend time with them with hobbies you both enjoy or have a fun day outdoors. This way you are being accountable to this person and they can help you cope through this phase.

  1. Volunteer

Find a place you can volunteer and put that loneliness to a good cause. This is the time you will feel close to your problems and struggles and will be able to relate to those who are struggling as well. Helping people in need will definitely give you a sense of joy and cheer you up. It may even give you a new perspective of looking at life!

  1. Get a pet

Pets are known to be mood changers! Those adorable creatures can just be so therapeutic with their cuteness and innocence. Pets help you establish emotional support and caring for them gives you a sense of responsibility that makes you feel good.

  1. Dive into arts and sports

Unleash the creative side of yourself and go out for movies, read a nice novel, take dance lessons, or join a sports club. Cultivate a new interest and you will be surprised to see where it takes you. Definitely away from that loneliness of yours!

  1. Meditation

Being lonely has to majorly do with your emotional and mental state of mind. If you are able to just take a moment and be by yourself, pay attention to your inner being. You might just find out why you’re feeling lonely and it could open doors to the countless possibilities to overcome the feeling. Being connected with your own self and taking care of your emotional and mental needs is very essential for your well-being. So, search deeper, you will find answers.
