Moving in with a friend as roommate can always be tricky. While it can be one of the most amazing things that you are able to live with your friend and be comfortable with both your lifestyles because you know and understand each other. But it can also be an awful experience because living together means getting to know each other in detail and if there are clashes, it can ruin your friendship.

So, you need to be very careful before you plan to live with a friend because you don’t want things to get awkward between you two.

Before you think of living with a friend as Flatmate, here are some things that you can look out for that can help you in deciding whether you should take that step or not –

Try and find out why your friend wants to move in with you

It is important to know why they want to move in with you – is it because they got a job or a college enrolment in the same city as you? Are they trying to move from their previous living conditions and need a change? The reason could be anything but knowing what it is key in your decision of letting them into your home.

Their level of connection with you

This is probably one of the most important factors to consider. It is essential that whoever you live with is able to connect with you and understands you so that there are no petty clashes in the house. How do they communicate with you? Are they open or do they bottle up things? That’s important to know because communication is key. You can’t live in a house with someone who does not communicate well with you because that would turn living with each other into tolerating one another at home.

Personality, hobbies, and cleanliness

How is their personality? Are they calm or hot-headed? What is their idea of fun? What kind of taste do they have in music? Do you think they will get along with your hobbies and likings? Ask these questions to know how well you will be able to adjust with your friend. Cleanliness is another thing. Do they keep their surroundings clean? Will you have a clean, cozy home even after they move in?

What are their sleeping habits?

A morning person or a party head? Another important question because it would get difficult if their sleeping habit is crazy and you both need to keep adjusting your sleep schedules to accommodate the other. This gets even more difficult when one needs to get to college/work in the morning while the other wants to sleep in or has a late shift at work.

The money situation

How is their money situation? Will they be able to pay up their part of the rent on time? Are they accountable when it comes to money? You need to ensure that your friend is able to afford to live with you and that it doesn’t fall on your head to pay for everything. One benefit of having someone live with you is that you are able to share expenses, so make sure you are able to do so.

These precautions are necessary to get an idea of what it would be like to live with a friend as roommate. Of course, you cannot know exactly until you live with them. But being careful never hurt anybody. Right?
