Things to avoid keeping inside your fridge

Life Hack

After you come back from your grocery store, do you open your fridge and stash everything inside it. Do you knw that you should avoid keeping inside fridge few things.

Well, the bad news is not everything that is in your grocery bag should go inside your fridge.

Good news is we are here to tell you what not to put inside your fridge.

There are some things that lose their flavour when kept inside the fridge and can also lead to losing their freshness. And you must have been thinking all along that keeping things in the fridge is meant to keep them fresh longer, right? I am sure after going through this article, you will run to your fridge and take out some if not all of the stuff that is mentioned here. Don’t be embarrassed because even I did the same.

1. Bread

If you think that keeping bread in the fridge will make it last longer, then you’re wrong. Keeping bread in the fridge will cause it to dry out which will lead to a shorter shelf life. It lasts longer if you just keep it out in a box or in its own packet on your kitchen counter or in a cupboard.

2. Garlic

Do not even make the mistake of keeping garlic inside your fridge. Garlic by nature has a very strong smell and keeping garlic inside the fridge will not only cause it to lose its smell but it will also lead to the smell of the garlic spreading to other food stuff in your fridge. Now that is something you don’t want happening, right?

3. Potato

Potatoes contain starch and if you keep potatoes inside the fridge, the starch will turn into sugar which will lead to an odd flavour in your potatoes.

4. Tomatoes

Now this is one mistake I have been doing myself. Keeping tomatoes in the fridge is a bad idea because the cold will make it mushy and squishy and again will totally lose its flavour,

5. Onions

Another no-no for fridge unless you want flavourless onions.

6. Honey

It is important to know that honey has a long shelf life in itself outside of the fridge so keeping it inside the fridge will not elongate the shelf life, it will only end up freezing it and making it impossible to spread.

7. Basil

Basil needs warmth to thrive, keeping it in the cold confines of the fridge will make it lose its flavour. Just put it in water and make sure to change the water every other day. This will make the basil stay fresh longer and the flavour too will last longer.

8. Uncut Melons

Every summer, the one thing everyone has to have in their fridge is melons-all kinds of melons. But did you know that whole, uncut melons should not be kept inside the fridge? Well, I most certainly did not know either. If you keep a whole melon inside your fridge, it loses some of the antioxidants and will lessen the health benefits that melons provide. After it’s cut, feel free to keep it inside.

9. Apples

Now, you must be thinking apples too?  Yes, apples too because they will stay crisper and more flavourful if you keep it outside. just avoid keeping inside fridge.

10. Spices

Not many people would keep spices inside their fridge but still you never know. If you keep them inside the fridge, then be prepared to have no flavours in your spices and you know that spices are all about the flavour.

11. Ground coffee

Never keep coffee inside the fridge. Keep it outside stored in an airtight jar or container.

12. Baked goods

Keeping baked goods inside the fridge will cause it to go stale. Keep them in sealed containers or bags to make them last longer and more fresh.

13. Hot Sauce

The cold tends to weaken the flavours and would lead to the hardening of the sauce which makes it more difficult to pour the sauce. And neither of these two things are very appealing, are they?

14. Stone fruits (Peaches, Nectarines, Plums, Apricots, and Cherries)

These are banned from the fridge. They belong in the kitchen counter or dining table in the sunshine.

15. Oil

Apart from nut oils, oil tends to harden and become cloudy if kept in the fridge. Better avoid keeping inside fridge.

16. Soy Sauce

Even though soy sauce bottles/containers will have the warning “Refrigerate after opening”, it is not necessary to follow that instruction because the salt content in the soy sauce is often enough to give it a long shelf life without having to refrigerate it.

Do tell us which of these things you have been keeping inside your fridge. We would be very interested to hear back from you.
